Picked hand lettering over CAD text for a client sign set and it actually worked out
I do mostly shop drawings for a small arch firm in Cleveland, but a restaurant client asked me to lay out their new menu boards six weeks ago. They wanted two options: clean CAD text with uniform spacing, or hand lettered headers with the specials in my own script. I picked the hand lettering because the owners are a husband and wife team and they said the place is supposed to feel like their grandmother's kitchen. First pass took me 4 hours for 8 boards, way longer than the 40 minutes CAD would have chewed through. The spacing was rough, some letters leaned, and I almost scrapped the whole batch. I gridded the boards at 1/4 inch and fixed 3 of them, then the owners came in and one of them teared up at the specials board. Got the check yesterday, $1,400 for the set, and they want the same style for their holiday menus in November. Anyway, does anyone here mix hand work with their normal drafting output, or do you keep it strictly to CAD and not touch a pen?
