Old coworker swore by grease spots on the hull, turns out he was on to something

Before a job in Port Arthur, a guy named Dale told me to mark soft spots on a dredge hull with a grease pencil instead of chalk. Did that and found two thin patches we'd have missed until they blew, so now I keep a grease pencil in my pocket at all times.

Grease pencil works okay until you get a hot day and it starts smearing all over everything. Chalk might not stick as good but at least you can see exactly where you marked it later.
