Pro tip: check your wire rope before a swing, not after
Had a boom swing go sideways on me last week in Baltimore when my hoist cable jumped the sheave and I spent 3 hours untangling it instead of dredging. Anyone else keep spare cable clamps on the barge just in case?
Last season on a job in Norfolk I started keeping two spare cable clamps on the barge after a similar mess with my winch line. What saved me was having a short length of chain and a shackle handy too, so I could take the load off the sheave and get the cable back in the groove without fighting it. I also got in the habit of running my hand along the rope each morning and checking the sheave for burrs or worn spots, since that is usually what makes it jump in the first place. Takes two minutes and it has kept me from losing a whole morning twice now. Not saying it fixes everything, but it works for me.
