Rant: the old timer at the dock in Morgan City told me to run my winch slower and I blew him off
Two seasons back an old operator named Ray watched me pulling a full 16 inch cutterhead load and he kept saying ease off the swing, ease off the swing, your pump is gonna eat itself. I laughed it off because we were behind schedule and the muck was coming up good. Six days later the main hydraulic pump on the 370 started whining and we lost half a shift plus about $2,800 in parts and labor. Ray just shook his head and said the pump tells you before it quits. The other side of this is I know guys who baby the swing so much they leave cutterhead spoil on the bottom and their production drops 30 percent, and the office gets on them about footage. So which is it, do you run the winch hot and trust the gauges, or do you slow down and eat the lower yardage? I still don't know if Ray was right about my machine or just right about pumps in general. Anyone here ever get a slow-down tip from a veteran that turned out to be pure gold, or the opposite? I want to hear from guys running hydraulic swing winches especially, because I'm about to swap a pump and I don't want to do it again next spring.
