Took a new guy 3 weeks to figure out why his cut was always 6 inches shallow
Had a kid on my crew last summer who kept coming up short on his dredge cut in the canal off Route 9, and he swore the survey stakes were wrong. Turned out he was reading the tide chart for the wrong inlet, 14 miles north of where we were working, so his numbers were off by almost a foot every shift. I only caught it because I noticed him checking his phone every morning before we started, and I asked what he was looking at. Anybody else run into guys trusting the wrong tide station, or is it just me who had to learn that the hard way too?

Checked the wrong station myself for two days before a deckhand pointed out his phone showed a different bay than mine. The real issue is nobody trains new guys on checking the station number against the project coordinates, they just hand over a phone and say watch the tide. Make the kid read the station ID off the chart out loud at the morning meeting and the problem fixes itself.
