Wrote off hydraulic winches for years, then watched a guy pull 60 feet of suction hose without stalling once
I always figured winches were for the tow trucks and small dredges, not something a mid size cutter suction operation needs. Then last weekend on a job outside Waco I watched a guy spool out 60 feet of suction hose on a 12 inch dredge with a hydraulic winch and he never touched the throttle once. Compared to my old setup where I'm out there hand cranking and cussing every time we reposition, it was a night and day difference in how fast he got lined up on the next cut. He said he quit fighting with cable pulls about two years ago and his crew's positioning time dropped to under ten minutes per move. I still think they're overkill for a little 6 inch dredge on a farm pond, but for anything running a long suction line I was wrong about them being a waste of money. Anybody here running one on a smaller hull, and did it actually pay off or just add another thing to maintain?
