Just finished a job in a 1920s house in Tacoma and my old taping method was a total joke
I used to always use the pre-mixed mud for taping, but this old house had walls that were all over the place. My buddy lent me his Marshalltown mixer and told me to try the 45-minute hot mud powder. The difference was night and day, it set up fast and didn't shrink at all on the uneven surfaces. Anyone else have a go-to mud for tricky old plaster walls?

Honestly thought hot mud was hype until I tried it.

Remember how it always felt like you were fighting the mud to get it smooth. Hot mud sets slower, so you're not racing against it drying in the bucket. That extra few minutes of open time lets you focus on the finish instead of just slapping it on before it turns to rock.

Totally get what you mean about it feeling like you're fighting the mud. I had a similar thing happen with some crumbly old lath. The pre-mix just sagged right out of the cracks like it was giving up. Switched to a 90 minute powder and finally got it to lock in. That control over the set time is a game changer for plaster.
