Just heard a homeowner in Denver say 'it's just mud and tape, how hard can it be' while I was grabbing coffee

That attitude is a straight path to a cracked ceiling. Abby_brown is right about the skill part. My neighbor tried to skim coat his whole living room after watching one video. The walls ended up looking like a topo map. He had to pay a pro triple to fix it. Some jobs just aren't for beginners.

Sounds like someone who's never tried to make a corner look clean. That first coat always goes on looking terrible and you realize it's a real skill. What's the worst DIY fail you've seen someone attempt?

Remember when everyone thought painting stripes was easy? That's how I feel about mud and tape now. Abby_brown hit on something with the first coat looking bad, but honestly the real test is the sanding. You can do a decent coat and still ruin it with one wrong sanding pass. What's the one step in a project that always trips you up?

Ugh, sanding is the worst! Rosecarr is so right about one wrong pass ruining everything. For me it's always the caulking step, it never looks smooth.
