Can we talk about how a $12 voltage tester beat my $180 meter on a dead circuit call
Had a call last Tuesday in a 1960s ranch outside of Rochester where half the kitchen outlets were dead and my Fluke was reading 118 volts on every one of them. I spent 40 minutes pulling faceplates and tracing hots, getting nowhere, and I was about to start opening the panel. Grabbed the cheap little non-contact tester out of my pouch on a hunch and it lit up only on the neutral slot, which pointed me straight to a shared neutral with a loose splice in a backstabbed outlet three boxes down. Took me 6 minutes after that. Any of you keep the cheap tester around for jobs like this, or do you trust your meter first?
