DAE try the freezer trick on a dead GPU and actually get it to boot?
I had a GTX 970 from a buddy's old rig in Minneapolis that would artifact like crazy after 10 minutes of any game. Read somewhere about baking cards in an oven and chickened out, so I wrapped it in a towel and threw it in the freezer for about 45 minutes instead. Pulled it out, let it sit until no condensation, and it ran clean for almost 3 weeks before the artifacts came back. So the freezer thing is real but it's temporary at best, and I'm wondering if the real fix is just a proper reflow or if I should tell people to skip this hack entirely.

Did you actually check the card for cold solder joints before freezing it, or did you just hope the cold would magically fix whatever was cracking? Because 3 weeks is about the same window you get from a half-assed reflow, which tells me the freezer is just shrinking the board enough to make the broken connection touch again. Next time it artifacts, try pressing on the back of the GPU die while it's running and see if the screen clears up, that'll tell you if it's a solder ball issue or something else. How hot was the card getting before the artifacts started, and did you ever check the VRAM temps?
