Fixed a 20 year old receiver this weekend, felt like a time traveler
Found a Pioneer SX-780 at an estate sale in Cleveland for $40. After two full days recapping the power supply and replacing a pair of bad 2SC945 transistors, it fired up without a pop or a hum. The difference in the FM stereo reception was night and day - went from barely pulling in a local station to locking onto WCLV at 104.9 like it was brand new. Anyone else find old gear that sounds better after a recap than most modern stuff?

Honestly I used to be the guy who thought recapping old gear was a waste of time and you should just buy something newer. But after hearing how quiet and clean the FM radio came through on a buddy's restored system I totally changed my tune.

That line about "felt like a time traveler" really hits home. I did the same with a Marantz 2230 a few months back and had that exact feeling when it went from dead quiet to blasting out the FM stereo indicator light. Did you have any trouble sourcing the 2SC945s or did you go with a different substitute? I ended up using KSC1845s in mine because the originals were getting hard to find.

Yeah I can barely solder without burning myself so finding the right parts was the least of my worries.
