Used to pull every cap and test it, now I just shotgun the $8 ones on site
Back when I ran a bench out of my garage in Tucson I would pull and test every electrolytic cap one at a time with an ESR meter, and a single TV board could eat two hours. Around 2019 I started just replacing the obvious bulged ones and any cap sitting near a hot regulator, then powering it up to see if the fault cleared. Last Tuesday a 55 inch set came in with a dead backlight and I swapped four caps for maybe $8 in parts, done in 25 minutes. My rework is uglier now and I toss more good caps than I'd like, but the customer gets the TV back the same day. Anybody else gone full shotgun on caps, or am I just getting lazy?
