He pulled me aside at a job in Dallas and said the governor rope should stay dry, grease just traps grit and chews the sheave. I did it his way on every unit after that. Last week I pulled a governor on a 1993 Dover and the rope was dry as a bone with flat spots on the sheave. Turns out the manual for that model calls for a light film every 6 months. So which is it, dry rope or greased rope, or does it just depend on the unit?
Used to buy into the dry rope thing too, mostly because that's what the old guys taught me and the ropes on their cars always looked fine. Then I started keeping logs on rope wear instead of going off memory, and the units with a light film every six months lasted way longer before showing flat spots. Problem is most people hear "grease" and lay it on thick, which is what cooks the sheave since it turns into a grit magnet. A thin film per the manual is a whole different animal than a sloppy coat.
