Rant: I greased the wrong sheave on a 1998 Montgomery and it ran quieter than a new one
Last Tuesday I was doing a routine service on a 1998 Montgomery hydro at a small office building in Dayton and decided to try a different grease on the deflector sheave just to see what would happen. The manual calls for a lithium complex but I had a tube of the polyurea stuff in my van from a different job, so I figured worst case I'd wipe it out and redo it. Ran the car up and down for about 20 minutes and the whine that had been there for years just went away, smoother than the brand new units we put in last spring. I am not saying polyurea belongs on every sheave, but now I want to know if anyone else has swapped grease types against the manual and gotten a result like that, or if I just got lucky on this one machine.
Doubt the polyurea is what actually fixed it, you probably just pushed fresh grease into a dry spot the old stuff never reached. That whine could've been a lack of lube in one spot and any decent grease would've quieted it down the same way. Blaming the grease type is a stretch when you changed two things at once.
