The brake test in 2017 I ignored finally caught up with me

Guy from the union local in Cleveland told me to always time the brake drop with a stopwatch, I thought he was being dramatic... then last month a car settled 4 feet on a packed lobby and I knew he was right. Now I time every single one, even on quick PMs, has anyone else had a close call that changed their routine?

Four feet on a packed lobby? That's not a close call, that's a professional oops with witnesses. My favorite part is how every union guy turns into a fortune teller after the fact, like they saw the future in a coffee stain. I had a similar wake up call with a stuck safety valve, thought I could skip the full cycle test, then the thing practically launched itself across the bay. Now I'm that annoying guy who triple checks everything, but hey, better annoying than explaining to a building manager why their elevator took a surprise vacation to the basement. Stopwatch's your best friend now, just don't let it become your therapist like mine did.

Three years ago I watched a hydro unit drop 18 inches with a tenant still inside, I felt my stomach hit the floor. @craig.parker is dead on about the fortune teller thing, these guys have seen the worst cases and they just know. Now I run the stopwatch on every single test, even the quick ones, because that one time is all it takes to ruin your whole week.
