A recruiter in Dallas deleted my follow up template and typed her own reply on a napkin
I met her at a coffee shop on Elm Street about 5 months ago and she watched me send a pitch email with a 3 paragraph follow up, then grabbed a napkin and wrote 12 words: 'Just checking if you saw this, happy to wait.' I argued my version showed effort and gave her context, but she said her reply rate on one liners was double mine, and honestly she was right. So do we really need all those extra sentences, or are we just writing them to feel less awkward about following up?

Man, that napkin thing hits hard because she basically cut out all the stuff that makes the email about YOU instead of the job. The extra sentences feel good to write, sure, but from the other side of the inbox they just look like more work to read before getting to the point. Think about it, you already gave your pitch in the first email, so what is paragraph two and three actually adding? Half the time it's just us trying to prove we're not being annoying, which is weird because a short note is way less annoying than a wall of text. Follow ups are a nudge, not a second pitch, and the lady clearly figured that out way before either of us did.
