I started adding one dumb line to my cold pitch emails and got 3 replies in a week
A guy in Omaha who runs a small design shop showed me his pitch template back in April and it had this weird line at the end asking if they wanted him to just send over 2 quick ideas for free. I figured that was begging and would kill my close rate, but I tried it on 30 pitches and got 3 replies and 1 paid gig out of it. The free ideas take me like 15 minutes each but people actually write back when there is something to look at instead of just my rates. Has anyone else tried leading with a tiny free sample in the first email, or does that just train clients to expect free work?

Free work usually makes me feel like a guy bringing donuts to a job interview, but 1 paid gig out of 30 pitches is better than my usual rate of zero. Maybe the trick is keeping the sample stupid small so it doesn't eat your whole day.
