Rant: I switched from a 'just checking in' follow up to sending a useful link, and my reply rate tripled
For two years I sent the same lame follow up email that said 'just checking in, any thoughts?' and honestly my reply rate was maybe 1 in 15. Three months ago I read a post on here about sending a relevant article or a quick tip instead of asking if they looked at my proposal. So I tried it. Now I send something like 'saw this piece about X, reminded me of your project' and I get a reply maybe 1 in 5 times. One client in Austin replied in 11 minutes after I sent a link about a tax change that affected her business. It feels less needy and more like I'm actually paying attention. My open rate stayed about the same but replies went way up. Has anyone else ditched the check in email for something else that worked?
The part nobody talks about is how this changes who you attract. When you send a check in, you're basically asking the person to do you a favor, and the people who reply to that are the ones who feel bad ignoring you. Send a real link with a quick note on why it matters to them and you pull in the folks who reply because it's worth their time. Different kind of client on the other end, way less hand holding. Curious if you noticed your calls getting shorter too, because mine did.
