Why does nobody talk about how the collections agency fee can cost more than the invoice you're chasing?
I lost almost 9 hours over two weeks trying to get a collections agency to take a $650 invoice from a web design client in Portland who went dark in January. I called three different agencies and every single one had a minimum fee or a flat upfront cost that ate half the invoice before anyone even sent a letter. One wanted $95 upfront plus 30 percent of whatever they recovered, so on $650 I might walk away with around $360 if it even worked. I finally just mailed a certified demand letter myself for $12 and the client paid in 4 days. Honestly the whole collections industry feels like a trap for small freelancers who are already getting stiffed. I wasted all that time reading fine print when the answer was a $12 envelope and a firm deadline. Has any agency actually earned their cut for you, or did you end up doing the chasing yourself?
