A seamstress in Houston told me my darts were fighting the fabric, and now my sketches finally make sense
So I've been sketching dress ideas for about 8 months now, mostly just for myself and a couple friends who let me make stuff for them. I kept running into this problem where my designs looked fine on paper but when I actually tried to build them, the torso always looked stiff and weird. Last month I posted a sketch of a wrap dress I was working on in a sewing group, and this older woman from Houston who runs a small alterations shop left a comment that stuck with me. She said, "your darts are fighting the fabric, stop drawing them like arrows and draw them like they're following the body." I had no idea what that meant at first, but she sent me a couple pics of her own patterns and it clicked. I went back and redrew 3 of my sketches with the darts curving along where the body actually bends, and the difference was wild. The patterns were way easier to cut and the fit on my test garment was way closer to what I pictured. Now I redraw everything with that in mind before I even pick a fabric. Has anyone else had a design tip that sounded weird until you tried it?
