Heard a binder at the shop say he never uses PVA for endpapers

Did you try letting the paste sit for a few minutes before using it? That tack makes a huge difference. I had the same wrinkling problem until someone told me to let the paper rest after brushing. Overnight drying is annoying but the results speak for themselves. Your endpapers will thank you.

Got told I was programming my tool offsets all wrong - old timer vs new training

That 45 degree thermal growth number the inspector threw out there is real in certain setups, Barb's machine might not see it yet but it catches up. I've seen enough temp swings in aluminum work to know touching off at the table can bite you later on. @barbaradavis you might get away with it now but give it a few hot summers and see if that tolerance holds.

My kid's kindergarten teacher said she prefers board books with sewn bindings, not glued

My very first bookbinding project was a "mending" job for a copy of The Hobbit that fell completely apart in my hands. I glued the spine, clamped it in my dad's vise too tight, and ended up with a book that looked like a sad accordion. At least your loose-leaf situation sounds more functional than my squished mess!

The $50 cable tester that made me rethink cheap tools

Ha, saw a guy on youtube prove that exact point with a cheap drill.

Debate: that nasty 45 degree bend behind a fireplace insert

Oh man, you are not wrong at all. A buddy of mine bought a house from the 70s and discovered the previous owner had just... sealed a cracked flue tile with duct tape and called it good. He spent an entire Saturday on the roof trying to get a cleanout door open that was painted shut. Ended up covered in creosote and honestly looked like he'd been in a chimney fight and lost. He just texted me a photo of his black handprints all over the white bathroom sink and said "this is fine.
