My sketchbook got way better after I quit drawing full outfits and started doing one weird sleeve at a time
For years I sketched whole head to toe looks in my notebook and most of them looked stiff and same-y. Last month I flipped it, just filling pages with collar ideas and puff sleeves and odd cuffs, nothing else on the page. Turns out the small stuff is where my actual ideas live, has anyone else tried breaking a design into pieces like that?
Doesn't this happen with cooking too, where you learn more by perfecting one sauce than by making a whole fancy meal? Same thing with music honestly, guitarists who practice one tricky chord change forever end up better than the ones forcing out full songs. Breaking things into pieces just works because your brain can actually focus on the details instead of juggling everything at once.
