Took me 5 weeks to figure out why my croquis looked off (it was the paper, not my drawing)
I keep a sketchbook for croquis and design ideas, and for over a month every figure I drew came out stumpy and wide no matter how many times I measured the 9 head ratio. I tried a new pencil, redid my grid, watched a 40 minute video on proportions, and still hated every page. Last Tuesday I finally laid a fresh sheet over an old one I liked from art school and the outline lined up almost perfect. The difference was the paper itself, my new book is 90 lb and the old one was 70 lb, and the heavier tooth was dragging my pencil wide on every curve. So the real fix was going back to a lighter sheet and a harder lead, not more practice. Now I want to know if anyone else picks sketchbooks by weight for croquis, or am I the only one who never checked the label before buying?
