Found out the average fence post only lasts 12 years in my Texas clay and I've been telling customers 20
Was reading through the AFA forums last week at the shop and a guy from Waco posted soil test results showing wood posts rot out twice as fast in blackland clay compared to sandy soil, 12 years vs 25. I've been quoting everyone in the DFW area based on that 20 year number for years now lol. Anyone else adjust their pitch based on soil type or do you just tell folks the national average and move on?
That "12 years vs 25" thing from the Waco guy tracks with what I've seen. I started asking customers what part of town they're in before I even give a number, because blackland clay out here eats posts alive. What worked for me was carrying two quotes to every job, one for standard treated pine and one for cedar or steel, and just telling folks straight up that clay soil cuts the life in half. Most people would rather hear the bad news up front than get surprised in ten years when their fence is leaning. Once I started doing that my callback rate actually went down, because nobody felt like I sold them a bill of goods. The national average is useless in a place where the ground is basically a sponge full of acid.
