Looking back at my first year's total of 27 fences
I was cleaning out my old truck last week and found my first year's job log. I put up 27 fences that year, mostly simple chain link and wood privacy jobs around my town. At the time, it felt like I was barely scraping by, working every weekend just to keep the lights on. Now, with over a decade in, I realize that number was everything. It meant I had figured out how to source my own posts, learned to set a line by myself, and got fast enough with a post hole digger to make a profit. That first 27 proved I could actually do this as a job, not just a side hustle. It's wild how a simple count in a notebook can hold so much weight. What was the first number that made you feel like a real fence guy?

Funny how the small numbers end up meaning the most. It's like that first dent in your truck or the first tool you bought with your own job money. You don't see it at the time, but later you realize it was the start of everything. That first handful of jobs proves you can actually make the thing in your head happen out in the real world.
