Nearly lost a 6 foot privacy run in Bee Cave because I forgot one dumb step on the post holes
Was setting 4x4 posts for a 6 foot cedar privacy run in Bee Cave last Thursday and the auger hit caliche about 18 inches down, so I did what I always do and dumped a bag of quickrete straight in dry. Problem was I never checked the string line after the first two posts and when I finally looked back, post three was leaning almost 2 inches off, which means the whole run would have been racked. I yanked it out before the concrete set, re-dug with a breaker bar, re-set it plumb, and saved it, but now I want to know, who else chases their line after every single post instead of trusting the first one?
Man, I feel this one in my bones. I did the exact same thing on a run out in Dripping Springs last spring, trusted my first two posts and never looked back at the line. By post five I was almost three inches out and had to pull two of them, concrete and all, which is a miserable job with a digging bar in July. Now I keep a cheap string line tied off on the first and last post and check it with a torpedo level after every single one, no exceptions. It only takes ten seconds and it has saved me twice since. Nobody wants to tear out a post after the mix sets up, that is just money and sweat down the drain.
