Pops at the supply yard in Reno laughed at me for pre-drilling every picket, he wasn't wrong either
An old fencer named Dale at the supply yard in Reno watched me predrill all 60 pickets on a cedar job and told me I was just adding hours for nothing because the screws bite fine into wet cedar. I didn't listen at first, then my drill battery died halfway through and slowed the whole install down. Next job I skipped the predrill and sure enough no splits, but now I'm second guessing it for dry or old wood. Anybody got a rule for when predrilling actually matters on pickets?
