Plumber quoted me $85 an hour for my first job and I said yes way too fast
Okay so I do small engine repair on the side, mostly mowers and weed eaters out of my garage here in Boise. Last week my neighbor's plumber was over fixing a burst pipe and he saw my workbench and asked if I could look at his pressure washer that wouldn't start. I said sure and he handed me a card and said he pays his helper $85 an hour for side work like that. I just nodded and said that sounds good because I had no clue what to say. Then I sat down and added it up. A tune up kit for that model runs about $28, a new carb is $40 if it needs one, and I usually spend 2 to 3 hours on a job like that. So I basically quoted myself into making maybe $15 an hour after parts. I texted him back later and said I'd do it for a flat $120 plus parts and he said deal before I could even finish typing. Now I'm wondering if I left money on the table by not asking what he usually charges his customers for the same repair. What do you all do when someone throws out an hourly number first, do you just match it or do you run your own math before answering?
