PSA: I found out my "fair" price was 30% under market after one call in March
So here's the two sides I keep going back and forth on: charge what feels fair in your gut, or check what other people in your area are actually billing before you put a number on paper. Six months ago I sent an invoice for a $600 weekend job and the client's partner asked why I was so cheap, which made me look up local rates and see people billing $85 an hour for the same work I did for $60. My gut was costing me money the whole time and I only caught it because a stranger asked one awkward question. Do you build your number from what you think you're worth, or do you ask around first and feel weird about it? I want to hear from people who picked one lane and stuck with it.
