Vent: My first logo client offered $150 flat and I said yes, now I'm wondering if I should have asked for hourly instead
Back in March I did my first paid design job for a guy named Dave who runs a bike shop in Portland, and he offered me $150 flat for a logo plus three revisions. I took it because I figured I needed the portfolio piece, but then the revisions turned into nine rounds over three weeks and I was basically making $5 an hour. My friend says always quote hourly on first gigs to protect yourself, but another freelancer told me flat rates make clients trust you more and lead to repeat work. What do you all do for that very first client, flat fee or hourly, and did it bite you later?
Flat fee isn't the problem, it's the unlimited revisions. Dave got nine rounds because nothing in that deal said when to stop, and hourly wouldn't have saved you unless you also capped the hours.
