Client told me my Upwork proposals were too robotic and I cut the canned lines by half

They said my bids all sounded like the same template and that killed any trust. Did tweaking your approach actually land you more gigs or was it a waste of time?

Huh, I mean I guess it depends. Some clients are super picky about that stuff, but honestly how many ways can you say "I'm good at this job" before it all sounds the same anyway.

Nod along smiling and it rarely matters what you actually say.

Yeah that whole "sounds like a template" thing is a killer. I had a guy straight up tell me my proposals gave off bad copy-paste vibes and it stung but he was right. @ryan_hart38 nod along if you want but I found swapping out the opening line for something specific from their job post changed things. Like instead of "I have experience in X" I'd say "your project reminds me of that time I fixed a similar mess for a client last fall" and it felt less robot-y. Did it get me more gigs? Yeah a few, but the real win was clients actually replying to my proposal instead of just closing the tab. You see any difference in your response rate since you cut the canned stuff?
