Found out our moisture meter was 14% off, ruined a glue down job
I had a 1,200 square foot glue down job in a basement last month. The meter read 6% on the concrete so I went ahead and started. Turns out the calibration was way off after I dropped it on a job site in Denver a few weeks back. The floor started bubbling up near the seams by day three. I checked the slab with a borrowed meter and it was reading 20%, way over the limit. So now I test my meter against a known dry sample every Monday. Anyone else ever trust a meter too long and pay for it?
My buddy runs a hardwood crew over in Ohio and he did the exact same thing a couple years ago. He had been using his pin meter for ages without checking it, and it told him the slab was at 9 percent. He laid about 900 feet of prefinished oak and it looked great for a week. Then the boards started cupping so bad he could see light under the edges. Turned out the pins were worn down and the readings were just garbage. He had to rip it all up and eat the cost of the material too, plus his client got another contractor to do the redo. Now he keeps a spare meter in his truck and checks both against each other with a calibration block every single morning before he starts. It is a hard lesson but at least he never skips that step now.
