Tried stapling my carpet pad seams instead of taping them on a 3 room job in Boise, and the stretch came out tighter than anything I've done
I've been taping pad seams forever, just the way I was shown when I started out. Two weeks ago I was doing three bedrooms in Boise and ran out of seaming tape halfway through the second room. The nearest supply house was 40 minutes each way, so on a whim I grabbed my stapler and shot a row of staples across the seam every couple of inches instead. I figured I'd have to go back and redo it, but when I stretched the carpet the pad held solid, no ridge, no buckling at the seams. The homeowner even said the floor felt better than the carpet in her hallway that a different crew did. What I learned is the staples let the pad move just a hair with the carpet instead of locking it down stiff like tape does, and it saved me almost two hours of drive time on that job. I'm not saying tape is wrong, I still use it on concrete and anywhere staples won't bite, but on a wood subfloor this trick surprised me. Any of you staple your pad seams, or am I late to something everybody already knew?
