Almost used wire on my sister's wedding bouquet last June, glad I grabbed the zip ties instead
The wire kept snapping on those thick dahlias at the Bend, Oregon venue so I switched to green zip ties mid-build and the whole thing held through a 90 degree afternoon, anyone else keep zip ties in their kit for heavy stems?
Green zip ties might look fine tucked into a bouquet but the stems go through them and the ties cut into the plant over time. Wire is the standard for a reason, you wrap it around a wood pick or a chenille stem first and it will not snap on thick dahlias. The trick is using 22 or 24 gauge and not the thin floral wire, plus wrapping in a spiral instead of pulling tight. Zip ties also do not let you adjust tension once they lock, so if a stem shifts you are cutting the whole thing off. Glad it held for the wedding, but keep the wire in the kit too.
