Found out a single rose stem costs my shop $4.12 before I even touch it
I was going through invoices last week and actually added up what I pay per stem from my Ecuador grower, and it came out to $4.12 with shipping and the box charge. That is just the rose sitting in the bucket, before I trim it, strip the leaves, or wrap it. I was pricing my single stems at $6 and thought I was making a killing. No wonder my margins felt tight at the end of December. Does anybody else track their true per stem cost or am I the only one who was guessing this whole time?
That $4.12 number hits home because most of us just look at the invoice total and never break it down per stem. I ran the same math on my hydrangeas last spring and found out I was basically paying customers to take them home. Shipping and box charges are the silent killers nobody warns you about when you start.
