Spent 6 hours hand-wiring a funeral piece in 2009, now I bang out the same look in 90 minutes with a cage
My old boss in Cleveland made us wire every sympathy wreath stem by stem, and I hated him for it until foam cages showed up and cut my build time down to a coffee break. Still miss how tight the old ones looked though, the foam versions always read a little puffier from across the room. Anyone here still wire by hand for high-end funerals or have you all switched over?
I used to roll my eyes at the old guys who refused to give up hand wiring, figured they were just stuck in their ways. Then we did a big Catholic funeral last spring and the family specifically asked for hand wired because the foam ones looked too round in the photos from the church. Stood there for four hours wrapping every stem and damn if the difference wasn't obvious up close, the line of the wreath just sits flatter and cleaner. Now I keep two price tiers, cage for the standard stuff and hand wired for anything over a certain dollar amount.
