A heat treat guy told me to stop chasing temps and I couldn't argue
Last Tuesday I was batching some castings and this older fella from the heat treat shop next door walks over while I'm fiddling with the furnace readout. He just watched me for a minute and then said, "you're babysitting a number that lies to you, the metal tells you when it's ready." I laughed it off but later I kept thinking about all the hours I spent fighting a thermocouple that was probably off by 20 degrees anyway. Turns out he was talking about looking at color, soak time, and how the part behaves when you pull it, not just whatever the display says. I tried his approach on a batch of ductile iron yesterday and honestly the results came out more consistent than when I was micromanaging every degree. Has anyone else had a veteran totally flip your process with one simple comment, or is it just me who was overthinking this? I'm curious what other old school tricks I've been missing.
