Checked out the old steel mill site in Gary, the rust on the structural beams is way worse than it looks from the road.

If you're ever near there for a job, give those overheads a real close look before you set anything up underneath. Anyone run into something like that on a demo or retrofit job?

Forget the beams for a second... check the concrete pads they sit on. That rust bleeds out and gets into the foundation. Saw a whole column shift because the base was just orange dust and powder. The beam looked solid but its whole footing was gone.

We had a beam give way on a site in Cleveland. The inside was just flakes, like a bad loaf of bread. Always tap it with a hammer first.

A visual check can catch a lot of rot too.
