I was dead wrong about milestone payments being unnecessary
For 3 years I only did lump sum billing at the end because I thought it was simpler. Then a $4,200 project went sideways in week 5 and I walked away with zero after 80 hours of work. Has anyone else had that moment where one bad contract flipped their whole payment strategy?

People expect you to front the risk for free and call it trust. I've watched neighbors lend out tools and never get them back, same principle. The mechanic who fixes your car without asking for a deposit is taking a gamble too. In my experience, milestones aren't about needing the cash, they're about keeping both sides honest before things go bad. A small payment at the start is just basic protection, like checking that the gas station pump actually works before you fill up.
