Rant: My 'simple' contract template cost me $1200
I used a free one I found online for a client project and it didn't have a kill fee. They ghosted me halfway through and I had no way to get paid for the work I'd already done. What's a good place to get a solid contract that covers this?

That's a tough lesson but free templates are a trap. You need a real contract, not just a form. A lawyer who knows your field is the only good place. Paying for a proper one now saves you thousands later. It's not an expense, it's the cost of doing business right.

Yeah, and it's so easy to fall for the free template thing when you're starting out. I tried to save money that way on a client project last year and the wording was just vague enough to cause a huge fight over what "final delivery" actually meant. Ended up costing me way more time and stress than a lawyer would have. You're totally right, it's not a fee, it's buying peace of mind. Never making that mistake again.
