Shoutout to the client who told me my invoices were 'too vague'
I used to just send one line like 'design work - $500' and hope it was fine. A bookkeeper client flagged it and said I needed itemized dates and hours to prove I actually did the work. Has anyone else had to redo their whole billing system from scratch after one piece of feedback like that?

Yeah, I'm not buying the drama either. It's just an invoice, not a tax audit, so maybe chill a little.

Actually I'm going to push back on this a bit and say that client was probably overdoing it. A single line invoice has worked fine for decades with my clients because they hired me for the final result, not a breakdown of my coffee breaks and email time. Itemizing every tiny task feels like you're justifying your value instead of letting your work speak for itself.

Had a buddy who itemized down to the cost of the paper clips he used. Client got so annoyed they switched to a flat fee just so they wouldn't have to read the novel anymore.
