Just learned my state's freelance invoice laws are way different than I thought

I was looking into why a client hadn't paid me after 45 days and stumbled on my state's website for freelance protections. Turns out in New York, if you don't have a written contract, you can't charge late fees or interest no matter what. That one detail cost me about $300 last year on overdue invoices. Has anyone else gotten burned by not checking their local laws first?

Yeah that's a rough way to learn that lesson.

Gotta disagree a little. Sometimes getting burned early is the only way some lessons actually stick.

Man @perry.jesse you nailed it with that one. For me it was with a used car I bought without getting it checked first. Engine blew two weeks later and I was out like $3,000. After that I never skip a mechanic inspection no matter how good the deal looks. Sometimes you just gotta pay that stupid tax to really get it.
