Picked a legal retainer from a big firm over a solo lawyer and got way worse service for triple the price
The solo lawyer actually answered my weekend emails and finished my freelance contract review in 2 days, while the firm took 2 weeks and charged $900 more for the same work - has anyone else found smaller firms way better for freelancers?

I read a thread on a freelancer forum where someone said big law firms treat small clients like an afterthought because they make so much more from corporations. Solo lawyers have to actually earn every client since they don't have that corporate safety net. Makes total sense that a smaller practice would hustle harder for someone paying their own money instead of a company's.

Have you thought about checking if the solo lawyer has a flat fee option instead of a retainer? Because I went through this exact nightmare last year. The big firm billed me $200 an hour for what turned out to be a paralegal reading my contracts and a junior associate emailing me once a week. The solo lawyer I switched to charged a flat $500 for the same contract review and had it back to me in three days with actual notes on what clauses to push back on. Small firms have way less overhead and they need your repeat business way more than a big firm does. Plus solo lawyers usually do the work themselves so you're getting their actual expertise, not some intern's summary. It's a no brainer once you've been burned by the big guys.

Honestly this shocked me when I first started freelancing too. I thought bigger law firm meant better everything - more resources, faster service, smarter people. Nope. They put your contract in a pile behind the corporate clients and forget about you for two weeks. $900 more for the same basic work is insane though, I can't even wrap my head around that markup. The solo lawyer sounds like they actually give a damn about getting paid for their time. Tbh the big firm probably has paralegals doing half the work while you're billed for the partner's hourly rate. Ngl makes me want to dump my current retainer and switch to someone smaller tomorrow.
