A chat with a plumber at the hardware store made me start a separate business checking account.
He said he'd been burned by mixing personal and work money, so I opened one the next day with $500 from a recent job, and now I can actually see what I'm making.

That "see what I'm making" part is huge. I did the same thing after a tax scare. It just makes everything simpler when you know exactly what the business has.

Right there with you, @wyattramirez. Getting that clear picture stopped me from mixing personal and business money, which was a mess. I started putting every single work expense on one card and only used my business account for deposits. Just having those two separate piles of money made tax time way less scary. It's not even about fancy software, just a simple habit that keeps things clean. You're totally right, knowing the real number takes so much weight off.

Seriously, the separate card thing is a game changer. I got a basic business checking account and a debit card just for fuel and supplies, and it saved me so many headaches. Before that I was digging through months of personal statements trying to remember what was for work, it was a nightmare. Now it's all in one place and I can actually see my profit.
