Getting a mortgage as a 1099: Champions Mortgage vs LoanDepot?

Trying to buy a house in TX this year (2026) but it's tough with freelance income. My realtor suggested Champions Mortgage or LoanDepot. Any freelancers have experience with either of these?

LoanDepot gave me the absolute runaround with my 1099s. It took weeks just to get a pre-approval because their underwriters didn't understand my business expenses.

Brought two years of bank statements plus my profit loss sheets to the meeting. It helped them see the full picture of my freelance income right away. Saved a lot of back and forth explaining.

Champions is way better for us self-employed folks. Plus if you're local, they know all the ins and outs of houston down payment assistance programs which can save you a ton of cash upfront. They got me cleared to close in 24 days on my freelance income.
