Rant: I used to just pick a city for cheap rent, now I run a full tax check first

A couple years back I moved to Phoenix because the rent was low and the sun was out. I didn't think about state income tax at all, which was a huge mistake. Now, before I even look at apartments, I spend an hour checking the local tax rules and estimated quarterly payments. Last month I almost chose a spot in Portland, but the local business tax for freelancers there would have cost me an extra $800 a year. It's a boring step, but it saves so much stress later. Anyone else have a specific checklist they run before picking a new spot?

Property taxes can sneak up on you too.

Yeah, they really do creep up on you (especially after a reassessment). Cora813 is totally right about Chicago, but even in smaller towns it can be a nasty shock. My bill jumped almost twenty percent last year with no warning.

Thought that was overkill until I moved to Chicago.

Doubt it's that serious, but matthew_walker has a point about property taxes.
