Built my first office with a plywood door on cinder blocks in 2012
That slab of wood wobbled every time I typed but it cost me $22. Now I have a $1200 electric sit-stand frame with a solid walnut top and I still miss the simplicity sometimes. Anyone else feel like the more you spend the less you actually get done?
Hold up, wait, wait. You paid actual money for a solid walnut top? For a desk? Man, I built my first setup out of a hollow core door I found in a skip and some milk crates. The wobble was driving me insane but it had character you know? I get what you mean though. Once you get the nice stuff the stress of keeping it perfect takes over. I spent a summer refinishing a vintage steelcase desk and now I barely want to touch it for fear of scratching the paint. Sometimes the junk just works better because you don't care if it gets a little beat up.
My $35 thrift store desk had a drawer that fell off every Tuesday for two years, and @the_john that walnut top would last longer if you just beat it up on purpose first.
