Public cloud skepticism finally wore off after a bad server crash

I spent years running my own servers in a closet at home, thought cloud was just hype. Then last May, a hard drive died on a Friday night and I lost 6 client projects worth of data. Moved everything to AWS that weekend and honestly, the peace of mind alone has been worth the $85 a month. Has anyone else here held out on something way too long and then regretted it?

Hold on, you lost 6 client projects? Six? In one crash? Man, that is my nightmare right there. I've been running a small web design thing from my spare room for years and I keep saying I'll get proper backups set up next month. Hearing you say that makes me want to go buy an external drive right this second, before I even finish typing this. What did the clients say when you told them? I can't even imagine making those phone calls.

Knew a guy who had to call his biggest client from the parking lot drinking from a flask.

Yeah but now you're paying someone else to hold your data hostage.
