Showerthought: Cleaning your laptop fan with a toothpick saved me $85
Last Tuesday my 3 year old Dell started overheating and shutting down during Zoom calls. I was about to drop $85 at a repair shop in Austin but decided to pop the back panel off first. Found a massive dust bunny clogging the fan and used a wooden toothpick to gently pry it out over 10 minutes. Runs quiet now and temps dropped by 15 degrees. Anyone else found random household stuff that works for tech fixes?

Hold up, is dust really causing that much trouble for your laptop? I've had plenty of laptops over the years and never once had to crack one open for dust. Maybe all those Youtube repair videos are making people panic over nothing. Fifteen degrees is a pretty big drop though, almost sounds too good to be true for just poking at it with a toothpick. I'd be more worried about snapping a fan blade or something than saving 85 bucks honestly.

You're thinking about snapping a blade but honestly those little fans are tougher than they look. I've cleaned out laptops that were basically stuffed with pet hair and dust bunnies the size of a cotton ball, and the fans still spin fine after. The temp drop makes total sense when you think about it though, airflow getting blocked means the heat just sits there cooking the CPU. Most people never crack their laptop open so they don't realize how bad it gets inside after a couple of years. Fifteen degrees is actually on the low end for a proper cleaning, I've seen people report drops of 20-25 degrees when they finally dig out a solid layer of dust. The Youtube repair hype is real for a reason, most folks just don't know what their machine looks like under the hood.
