That time my attempt at a 'rustic' vase turned into a blob monster

I noticed all these new paint-your-own-pottery places popping up around town (there's like three now, it's a whole thing). So I went to one last week to make a vase for my mom. I was aiming for that cool, handmade look, but my glaze went crazy and dripped everywhere. When it came out of the kiln, it looked like a lumpy potato with ears. My mom still says she loves it, but I catch her using it to hold spare change.

Right? Since when do handmade stuff have to look like it came from a store? My last pottery class mug is so lopsided it can't even sit flat. It looks like a drunk cup. But it holds my pens just fine. I say the weird shapes give them personality.

Okay, so your vase looks like a lumpy potato with ears. Big deal. It still holds stuff, right? Your mom uses it for change, so it has a job. People need to chill about things not being picture perfect. It's handmade, that's the point.

Ears on a vase? Seriously?

But really, what's the big deal if a vase has ears? Like @elliot887 said, it still holds stuff, so who cares if it's weird? My buddy made a bowl that looks like a crashed spaceship, but it holds his keys just fine. Isn't the whole point of handmade stuff that it's not perfect? Why do we get so hung up on things looking store-bought? If it works, it works.
